Dither Boy v2.0 is here!

You asked for video and we did it! Video dithering is added to Dither Boy v2 at no extra cost

Dither Boy Version 2.0: Major Update with Video Dithering, Presets & Batch Processing

I’m excited to finally share Dither Boy version 2.0, a major update that adds video support, presets, batch dithering, full screen mode, and a bunch of quality of life improvements. Here’s a look at what’s new, how to get the update, and a few tips on making the most of these features.

Recap: What is Dither Boy?

If you’re new here: Dither Boy is standalone dithering software for designers, creatives, and now animators and video editors.

It lets you dither images and videos live, with over 20 different algorithms. There’s no subscription, just a one-time purchase, and all future updates are included for free.

How to Get the Update

Head over to studioaaa.com/ditherboy and check the “Dither Boy updates” section to find the update log. Every update note and tutorial is listed there. Updates aren’t forced, if you want to stay on an older version, that’s fine… but the update is ready for everyone who owns the software.

If you don’t see the email with your update link, check your spam folder, or just reach out by email and I’ll resend it. Once you have it, uninstall your current version, install the new one, and you’re good to go.

What’s New in v2.0?

Video Dithering

Dither Boy now supports importing and processing video files. There are some limits depending on your computer’s specs, but you can toggle “Expert Mode” in the Help menu to lift those limits (just save your other work before trying it with big files). I’ll have a full tutorial covering advanced video settings soon.

Full Screen Mode

The interface now supports full screen, letting you work with landscape images more comfortably. There’s also a new menu bar for easier navigation and importing video. In hindsight it was silly not to add this to v1 but here we are!

Randomize & Shuffle Features

You can now randomize your dither effect and scale, or instantly shuffle your adjustment sliders for endless combinations. If you land on something you like, just hit “Save Preset” to keep it handy for future projects.

Adjustment Presets

Presets are a big time saver. Save any adjustment setup with a custom name, and instantly reload it later, or share it with friends. I’ll be releasing more free preset packs soon, so you can recreate effects I’ve used in my videos without following a full tutorial.

Copy & Paste Direct to Your Workflow

You no longer have to save every single iteration to a file. Just copy your dithered image to your clipboard, then paste it straight into Photoshop, Affinity Photo, a tweet, or whatever program you’re working in.

Batch Processing

Batch processing lets you run the same dither effect across a whole batch of images, as long as they’re the same size. Since the dithering output depends on image dimensions, I recommend using the Preset feature when processing images of different sizes to make sure you get consistent results.

Purge Temp Folders

There’s a new option to purge temporary files created during heavy processing, especially useful if you’re dithering videos or running batch operations.

The Future of Dither Boy!

There’s a lot more coming. At the time of this release, video dithering was by far the most requested feature, and it’s already here just a month after launch. Future plans include companion software and maybe a colour update. I’m aiming to push Dither Boy further than just “pick two colors” so stay tuned.

Thank you so much if you’ve already supported, shared, or picked up a copy. Your feedback keeps the updates coming, so let me know what features you want next, email me your work, join the Discord, and keep an eye out for more tutorials soon.

If you’re seeing this and don’t have your update yet, your email is on the list, it’s going out literally right now as i write this blog post. Check your inbox, follow the guide, and enjoy Dither Boy 2.0!
